Jesus Turned Water To Wine, Not Alcohol

The Bible says Jesus miraculously turned water into wine. It never says, however, He turned water into alcohol. Don’t let anyone push you into believing the Bible says otherwise. I’ve not dealt directly with Jesus turning water to wine at Gulf Coast Pastor, but I have in Ancient Wine and the Bible

Mark H. Creech,* however, has recently written a couple of excellent articles on Jesus turning water into wine. These are well worth your time. Links are given below.

I appreciate his stand, and am honored that he uses Ancient Wine and the Bible as a reference. He also references another book I highly recommend, Alcohol Today: Abstinence in an Age of Indulgence.

  1. Wine contains alcohol.

Why do you think that there are so many references in the Bible to "being drunk with wine".

    Un-be-lieveable.

    1. Steve Martin,

Of course there is alcoholic wine in the Bible. There is also, however, nonalcoholic wine in the Bible. Both are called wine. So you have to determine from the context which kind of wine is being spoken of.

Would you believe it if I showed it to you straight from the Bible?

Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved. -Matthew 9:17
Notice Jesus Himself calls both fermented and unfermented wine by the name wine (oinos).

So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine.
      -Proverbs 3:10
Just pressed grapes do not produce alcoholic wine, rather unfermented wine or grape juice. This is true of the next couple of verses as well.

No treaders will tread out wine in the presses. -Isaiah 16:10

The threshing floors shall be full of wheat,
And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.
      -Joel 2:24

“As the new wine is found in the cluster,
And one says, ‘Do not destroy it,
For a blessing is in it,’
      -Isaiah 65:8
Notice God said the wine in in the cluster of grapes. That is not alcohol.

Then Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand. -Genesis 40:11
This was certainly not an alcoholic drink.

And there are other such verses.
