Be Clothed In Modest Apparel

In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing. -1 Timothy 2:9
3 Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—
4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. -1 Peter 3:3-4

There is nothing wrong in itself with nice clothes and jewelry, just don‘t go overboard.
But a Christian lady should not rely on that for her beauty.

Nothing wrong with clothes that are in fashion.
But clothing should not be sexually suggestive.

Clothing should not imply that the wearer is immodest or immoral.
Moms and dads should occasionally talk with their daughters about this.

Males are very attracted to the opposite sex by sight.
Showing a little too much is going to get their attention, but the guys most attracted by sexy or immodest clothing - is that the kind of guy you really want to attract?
If that is what attracts him to you - is he going to be just as attracted to the next scantily clad girl who walks by?
Is that the kind of man you really want to marry?
By the way, these and other verses would also imply men should also dress and act decently.

  1. David, what are your thoughts about pastors who wear blue jeans when preaching?

    1. Wranglers or Levi’s?

I suppose that would be in the area of preference rather than biblical conviction. But I don’t have any strong concerns one way or the other as long as their dress is clean, decent, and I suppose culturally acceptable. And I guess whether jeans are acceptable would vary from church to church.

Truth be told, I’ve been known to wear Wrangler “Dress Jeans” in the pulpit, sometimes with a coat and tie (Sunday Mornings). And usually with a long sleeved Stafford dress shirt. If you’re not familiar with these dress jeans, they look about the same as regular dress pants; and of course, cowboy boots. But a preacher should never, never wear shorts!

  2. Good admonition for ladies. I think this would go a long way in not only showing Christians are different, but it could help our young men not to be tempted in the world, even out churches.

How does you church handle it when a young lady comes in wearing very revealing clothing? It's a delicate situation to be sure and I am confident depends largely on the situation. But it would be interesting to know since this seems to be a problem throughout our churches, especially in the summer months.
